… did the fleeting meeting between Jaqueline Kennedy and Gianni Agnelli take place in the waters of Capri?
It is widely known that among the illustrious guests of the Salotto del mondo there was also the wife of John Fitzgerald Kennedy, during the Capri years of “dolce vita ”. There are many photos of her during her walks through the streets of the historic center and among the traditional boutiques of the island.
The first and only meeting between the two, the mystery that enveloped the alleged betrayal of Jaqueline.
However, not many know that an episode has still remained mysterious, linked to a day at sea that saw the meeting between the industrial magnate Gianni Agnelli and the beautiful Jackie.
In Jaqueline’s latest biography, confirming the mysterious encounter, it is said that she received and then burned a love letter from Agnelli; there are many skeptics, considering the well-known lack of sentimental weakness, “never and for no reason”, of the then helmsman of Fiat.
Yet, during one Capri afternoon, a journalist who was sitting at the Grand Hotel Quisisana near the first lady’s table heard Jakie say: “ Where is Agnelli’s yacht ?” and knowing that she was sailing offshore between Capri and Ravello, she gave orders to go to Ravello that very same evening.
As you can imagine, the “state of alert” of the paparazzi was immediately triggered, then numerous in the Living room of the world : that evening the word went quickly, the caprese tam-tam acted like those of the jungle “ Ravello, go to Ravello! ” they said.
And so everyone ran to the port, embarking on a boat, some rented, some already equipped, quickly moving in the wake of the yacht on which Jackie was moving, while keeping at a safe distance so as not to “ruin” any scoop tabloid.
The vehicle stopped in Ravello, but not her, who moved offshore, in the middle of the high seas, aboard a tender headed, coincidentally, towards Agnelli’s boat. Once the first lady was welcomed on board, the yacht disappeared over the horizon. Speedboats, boats and all the photographers and paparazzi who had thrown themselves into desperate pursuit were sown. Nobody was able to document the appetizing opportunity.
The next morning at dawn she left for the United States while Mr. Fiat disappeared to other shores of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Perhaps there was no word “love”, but the chroniclers of the time certainly could not deny the fleeting and mysterious meeting, which a lot made us suspect, the first and only one of their lives that took place between the two protagonists of the story, where Capri and its sea served as the stage for the episode.
