Project for a Community House on Capri approved

The facility, housed in the former hotel institute, will provide health services for residents

There is important news in store for the residents of Capri: in fact, the Town Council has signed a memorandum of understanding with the asl regarding the drafting of contracts for community use, aimed at providing new services to citizens. Thus, the process for the financing and construction of a “Community House,” a health facility to flank those already existing, has been initiated. To understand what this project consists of and what benefits it will bring to the island, we interviewed Bruno D’Orazi, a majority councilor with responsibility for the hospital, hygiene and health, and civil protection.

What assumptions led to the birth of this project?

It is an idea that has existed for some time, one of the points of the electoral program of our list, that of allocating the property of the former hotel institute for health activities, to complement and support those already existing. We set to work right away but, because of the pandemic, the plan slowed down. In the meantime, the state has seen fit to design a new non-hospital territorial healthcare, following the congestion of wards due to covid. To do this, funding from the NRP, which was adopted by the regions to establish new health or community homes, will be used; one of these will be precisely the one in Capri, and therefore, by adhering to this project of the state, we have respected the destination plan that we had envisioned for the former hotel institute from the beginning“.

What types of benefits and services will the new facility provide?

There will be diagnostic outpatient clinics and counseling services, new nurses and doctors will be employed; the center will be open from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. The novelty of the organization of territorial health care, in fact, is based on 4 points: the creation precisely of Community Homes, community hospitals, home care and the COT, Territorial Operations Center, to network specialists and patients. In addition, the council resolution provided for another facility in Capri to be dedicated to additional services, such as 118, and provided premises for housing for hydro ambulance personnel. A series of free loan agreements will be entered into to carry out these activities; although health care is not directly managed by us local administrators, we are called upon to create the conditions so that services can be expanded by making resources available, and that is exactly what we have done. Our goal is to always look for new ways to bring more services to the population“.

What features does the facility that will be regenerated have? And what is the expected timeline for it to become operational?

The facility was a disused school building. According to the city plan, the area where the building is located can only be used for educational or health activities; therefore, it is perfectly in line with what its new function will be. The project has 48 months as a timeline for completion“.

What do you think will be the benefits for Capri and its residents?

The benefits will be numerous, as the services will complement those of the district hospital, ensuring easier use for citizens. For example, residents of the island will be able to have MRIs, CT scans and other exams without having the need to reach Naples, as well as all the other services that will be provided within this new facility“.
