Santa Sofia

In the heart of Anacapri’s historic centre, walking along Via Giuseppe Orlandi you reach Piazza Diaz, one of the village’s most charming squares, with its red brick paving and majolica ceramic benches decorated by local artist Sergio Rubino, depicting scenes and traditions from Anacapri’s daily life. Here stands the Church of Santa Sofia, the main religious building of the village, built on the site where the ancient Church of San Carlo once stood and replacing the former parish church of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli.

Built in the 16th century, the church features a façade with Baroque elements and preserves an ancient bell tower completed in the 18th century. The interior, recently restored, consists of a central nave with a barrel vault and two side aisles with characteristic cross vaults, leading to the chapels dedicated to Saint Anthony and the Madonna del Buon Consiglio.

Around the Church of Santa Sofia, with its distinctive asymmetrically arranged domes, the first settlement of Anacapri developed. Still today, this place represents a point of reference for the local community, a meeting place where generations come together and where the bond between history, tradition, and everyday village life continues to thrive.
