Sant’Antonio

The Church of Sant’Antonio da Padova, also known as the Church of the Sailors, was completed in the 17th century and underwent several restoration and expansion works over time, including the addition of the bell gable and the sacristy. It can be reached by following the scenic Scala Fenicia, the ancient path carved into the rock that connects Anacapri with the port of Marina Grande.

The Scala Fenicia, with its 921 steps and a difference in elevation of approximately 300 metres, is one of the island’s most fascinating historical and scenic routes. Along this path, sailors would stop and find shelter in the church before beginning their descent towards the harbour, placing here an image of Saint Anthony, chosen as their protector. The building features a simple and intimate architectural style, enhanced by a semicircular masonry terrace outside.

Still today, the church maintains a strong connection with the religious traditions of Anacapri. Every year on 1 June, the traditional “Tredicina” begins in honour of the patron saint, with Holy Mass celebrated at 7:00 a.m. This is a deeply felt moment for the local community, who gather at the church to pay tribute to Saint Anthony.
