San Michele della Croce

The Church of San Michele della Croce is a small place of worship immersed in the peaceful landscape of Capri, where nature and history come together. Dedicated to Saint Michael the Archangel, its name is linked to the presence of a nearby cave associated with the saint’s cult, a place that in the past is believed to have offered shelter to the local population during times of uncertainty and during Saracen raids.

Built in the 12th century, the church still preserves the charm of the island’s ancient religious architecture. Its simple and harmonious structure reflects the different construction phases that took place over time, through restorations and modifications that accompanied the long history of the building. Surrounded by greenery and a charming garden, it represents one of the most secluded and lesser-known corners of Capri’s historical heritage.

In 1806, during the period of the British occupation of Capri, the church was temporarily used as a gunpowder storage facility due to its proximity to an important military structure built in the area. This episode reflects the many transformations that shaped the building throughout the centuries, as a place of prayer that also became part of the military events that marked the history of the island.
