When to go to Capri?

Capri is the perfect place to spend a dream summer; its beautiful crystal clear waters and its golden beaches make it the ideal destination for a seaside tourism ranging from quiet family vacation to one with friends, for a lot of fun. Yet, if we ask ourselves when to go to Capri, the answer might positively surprise us.

The island is, in fact, so full of history, culture and natural wonders that even in other seasons it does not stop offering valid reasons for a visit. Let’s discover together the beauty of Capri during all seasons of the year!

Autumn

The season that follows summer is a great time to plan a trip to Capri. You can hike and walk the paths in a more calm and relaxed atmosphere. The still pleasant climate also makes it possible to continue enjoying the days at the sea, without the crowd of the hottest periods. Just equip yourself with the right clothing, and possibly even a rainy day can become enjoyable if you choose the right activities.

For example, you can plan a visit to the Villas of Tiberius. Did you know that in Capri the Roman emperor built not just one, but 12? The remains are scattered throughout the whole island, but only 3 have preserved the original structure: Villa Jovis, Villa Damecuta and Palazzo a Mare.

Rich in wonderful views is the itinerary that leads from the Piazzetta along the Pizzolungo promenade, a few kilometers in which the landscape takes on wonderful colors, especially with the warm and cosy colors of autumn. The wonderful view of the Faraglioni and the Sorrentine Peninsula is the reason why you have to try this charming route!

Finally, for lovers of trekking, we recommend reaching the highest point of the island, Monte Solaro, almost 600 meters above sea level, from which you can enjoy the view of the entire island, with the Gulf of Naples and Salerno. The most comfortable way is taking the chairlift from Piazza Vittoria, but for those who are not afraid of an hour’s walk, you can also climb to the top on foot.

For all these reasons, you should consider also this season, if thinking about to go to Capri!

Winter

It might seem an unusual moment to plan your visit, but in fact even in winter the island offers great emotions. If you are thinking about when to go to Capri, why not choose this period full of festivities and magical moments to spend with the family?

Just follow a few small steps: check the weather forecast to avoid problems during the trip and pack heavy clothes! In this season even a simple tour in the center of Anacapri can leave you pleasantly surprised. The second municipality of the island, equally beautiful but with a less pronounced tourist vocation, is less affected by the winter closing of activities. The best way to visit it is, without any doubts, by getting lost in the narrow streets and squares of its old town, stopping in its picturesque attractions: from the church of Santa Sofia to that of San Michele, from the Casa Rossa, to Via Giuseppe Orlandi to Piazza Boffe.

And don’t worry if the cold stops you from going on the beautiful beaches of the island: you can take advantage of a visit to the interesting museums. Still in Anacapri, we recommend a visit to Villa San Michele, the beautiful house built in 1885 at the behest of Axel Munthe, a young doctor who decided to settle here creating a villa on the remains of an ancient chapel dedicated to San Michele. And we recommend also the Barbarossa Castle, an ancient fortification dating back to the time of the independent Duchy of Amalfi.

Both sites remain open throughout the year.

The season of rebirth is perfect for a visit to Capri for many reasons. The soft light that colors the horizon, the mild climate, the trees in bloom… And you can enjoy everything at its best because there are still few tourists who venture here. In addition, although it is still early to swim, there is an ideal weather for long and pleasant walks.

One of the most spectacular walks on Capri is the Sentiero dei Fortini, which runs along the sea from the Blue Grotto to the Punta Carena lighthouse. On the way there are the three forts that once served to defend Capri: Orrico, Pino and Mesola.  The forts are ancient military posts built by the British in 1806 and enlarged by the French after the capture of Capri; the road is marked by information tiles and signs, the journey time is about 3 hours.

Finally, we recommend taking advantage of the temperate climate of spring to ascend the wonderful Scala Fenicia: 921 steps that connect the port of Marina Grande with Anacapri. In ancient times this was the only way to reach the “higher” town of the island, before the road was built in the second half of the ‘800. Its name derives from the hypothesis that the Phoenicians had built it, but in reality it is a work of Greek manufacture.

The route begins in Marina Grande, near Palazzo a Mare, and along the way you will find beautiful jewels such as a chapel dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, protector of Anacapri, crosses carved in stone and an ancient stone door, that once was the border between Capri and Anacapri.

In short, the answer to the question “when to go to Capri?” is simple… every time of the year is good for a trip to this beautiful island!
