The name of our island, the Salotto del Mondo, has been around and continues to be around the world, used in many ways such as hotels, restaurants, streets, palaces and objects of all kinds. In any case, semantically it has always attached to itself a meaning equal to prestige, elegance, luxury, elements tending to identify a high product quality.
In many cases, the name “Capri” has made history, as it happened in the automotive sector, linked to a choice of Ford, which from 1969 put into production a coupe of great success in Europe: “The car that you had always promised!” This is the slogan with which the company launched its coupe Capri. A right claim, because the new Ford combined a spectacular and gritty line with a purchase cost and maintenance of normal sedan.
The father of the family could thus satisfy his ego without too many sacrifices in terms of habitability and luggage; probably also the other members of the household accepted to a good degree some renunciation in favor of a car that constituted an excellent “status symbol” of which the name is fully part.
In America aveva sfondato la Mustang, mentre per il vecchio continente l’azienda pensò ad un prodotto più adatto al mercato europeo; l’obiettivo era creare un’automobile di vasta diffusione, abitabilità per più di due persone, ampio bagagliaio e prezzi accessibili. La base stilistica furono la bellissima Taunus GT tedesca e la GBX inglese, mentre il nome “Capri” fu ripreso dalla versione cabrio della Consul 315.
Il primo rinnovamento estetico importante risale al 1974, avvicinandola ad una berlina “quasi” normale, mentre il secondo cambiamento avviene nel 1978, trasformandola, con numerosi accorgimenti, in una vettura moderna ed accattivante. Ci fu, poi, per gli amanti della velocità, anche una versione da corsa, la “Capri Rs 2600”.
Il mix di design-prezzo portò al successo la Ford “Capri” che rimase in produzione fino al 1985, protagonista anche di una serie di telefilm dal titolo “I Professional”, alcuni anni fa in onda su TeleMonteCarlo. A distanza di vent’anni, la Ford pensò di riutilizzare il nome “Capri” per una vettura coupè che uscì nel 2005, l’ultima erede storica.
