Torre della Guardia

La Torre della Guardia stands in the south-west of the island, just above Punta Carena. Completed towards the end of the 15th century, it played the role of a fortress on this western side, against the numerous invasions of the Saracens. Later, it was then used by the British and French forces during the Napoleonic wars, which is why some cannons are still visible today.

Only at the end of the 19th century did the property consisting of the tower and the barracks pass into the hands of the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. The Swedish writer spent long periods of his stay on the island in this place that he considered best suited to studying and writing.

Subsequently Munthe sold it to Baroness von Uexkull, friend and translator of his works into German. This place was also the seat of the study center on the history and culture of the Mediterranean.
